The 63rd Gosling Cup is being hosted this year by last year’s winners, Essex Union South, at Church Hall Farm in Paglesham.
The competition was the brainchild of former district commissioner of the East Essex Hunt Pony Club, Mrs Gosling; who developed the event to educate and discipline riders because she was worried about varying standards after the war.
The modern version of the competition can include as many as twenty-four teams of four members, from fourteen different pony club branches- competing against each other for the ultimate prize: The Gosling Cup Title.
The contest includes five separate phases, (Tack and Turnout; Dressage; Team Ride; Cross-country and Show Jumping), which always makes for an exciting day of competition.
Truly a blueprint for the present form of One Day Eventing, the success of the Gosling Cup over the years has lead to a refinement of standards within Pony Clubs.
This year looks to be as exhilarating as ever, as tomorrow’s event looms. Hooked on Horses would like to wish all the competitors the best of luck, and an enjoyable day of competition.
