Essex rider Sarah Fortt is hoping for a win at the Horse of the Year Show after qualifying with her pony Toby.

The 24-year-old from Purleigh beat off competition from riders across the country to gain her place. Sarah Fortt told BBC Essex: “It’s everybody’s dream to qualify for Horse of the Year Show.”

It is also great news for seven-year-old Toby, who in 2008 suffered two fractures to his hind leg and faced a less than optimistic future.

Travellers Fortune’ or ‘Toby’ is our family pony. We’ve had him since he was six-months-old,” said Sarah. The piebald traditional gypsy cob was bought by Sarah’s partner from some local gypsies, after being born alongside the A130. “It was a bit of a hectic start for him, but he is absolutely lovely,” said Sarah.

He suffered an injury two-years-ago and at the time vets were not sure if he would recover. “Fortunately, he’s made a full recovery, so it is absolutely fantastic to get him back at the Horse of the Year Show,” she added.

With several months until the October event, Sarah is making sure Toby stays in top condition.
