Our BIG INTERVIEW this month is with top show producer Katie Jerram, who hails from Dunmow in Essex.

It was time for Katie to move onto horses when she was sixteen and she was brought another youngster – the four-year-old Starlight Chatterbox, who proved to be a very cheeky chestnut mare.

“She was always pulled in first at shows and then blew it. We qualified time and time again for HOYS and The Royal International,” said Katie, who later used her as a successful brood mare.

When Katie left school at sixteen, her mother and father wanted her to go to Lady Claytons finishing school in London.

“My love and passion was for horses, and going back into a classroom was a dreadful thought,” admits Katie. At her parents request she did the interview and got a place at the school, but refused to go. “With horses I was happy,” said Katie.

We catch up with young event rider Maddie Taylor, from Maldon in Essex, on her road to the Badminton Grass Roots Final.

“Biscuit enjoyed every second of his day out, even befriending the secretary Fiona, and her assistant – who said he was like a ‘cuddly golden retriever!’ He was impeccably behaved, and I was really pleased with him even though we didn’t qualify for the final on this occasion.

Dakota also had a good day out, although he was a bit boisterous and almost too confident in his first round of the day, as we had a bit of an argument when I brought him back to trot from canter to change his lead. He did go on to win this class, which was the BE 90 and got a third in the BE 100 – so both my boys did me proud.

Next in the calendar was the Pony Trial with Bandalera at Weston Park…”

Blaircourt partner, Patrick Martin explains all about putting your mare into foal in this months veterinary column.

“Once your mare comes in to season, liaise immediately with your vet or the stud as to the timing of events from there on. It is often easier to send the mare to the stud as soon as she comes into season and leave the timing of the covering to them as they should have the necessary experience to cover the mare at the correct time. If you have chosen for your mare to be artificial inseminated, then your vet will want to monitor the progress of your mare’s cycle by ultrasound exam. These are usually performed once or twice daily as the timing of insemination is crucial. The ordering of the semen from the stud also has to be factored into the timing – this usually takes twenty-four hours for courier transport – and so it is crucial that all parties have enough time to perform their respective duties…”

Bethany Rose Horobin wrote a diary giving readers an insight to life at a BYRDS camp this month, which supplements our full report on the Eastern Dressage Region open evening.

“When we arrived at Towerlands, Braintree, on Monday, we were late as usual! It was 9.30 so we quickly got Leo settled into his stable and then my friend Beth and I rushed off to the first activity on the agenda – stable management. We learnt about TPR of the horse, (Temperature, Pulse and Respiration). It was really interesting, and would be very helpful to know in case your pony is  feeling off colour. Next was the first riding lesson of the camp, which was really educational and I think everybody enjoyed their lessons. Following this, we then had a test practise for the competition on the second day…”

Congratulations to Alice Wotton, our May rider of the month – grab a copy of the magazine to find out more about Alice and her life with horses so far.

“This months rider of the month is thirteen-year-old Alice Wotton who is based in Twinstead, near Halstead, Essex; she has had a great month and the highlight being a win at the NPS/TopSpec Supreme Dressage Finals which were held at Addington Manor on the eleventh April 2010.

Alice started riding when she was nine, when her family first moved down to Essex from North Wales.  She initially had lessons at a riding school, but when her mum were sure that the riding bug had well and truly bitten, she decided to go ahead and get Alice her first pony…”
