Horse riders saddle up for Teenage Cancer Trust fundraiser

A unique horse trek across the sierras of South America has been launched to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, a UK charity devoted to improving the lives of young people with cancer. The charity is appealing for horse riders to ‘saddle up’ and raise money for this important cause.

This November the charity is encouraging horse riders to saddle up and be part of a nine day trek across Uruguay. Perfect for riders that like a challenge and want to experience the beauty of riding along mountain ridges in South America.

Riders will spend an average of five hours a day in the saddle, trekking through the picturesque towns of Casa Esmeralda, El Parador de las Sierras de Rocha and La Tahona. With lunch breaks at river crossings, dinners at small mountain top restaurants and camps under beautiful old Coronilla trees, this trek is a once in a lifetime experience.

Taking place during November 2010, all funds raised will go towards building specialist cancer units in NHS hospitals specifically for teenagers and young people with cancer. The charity hopes to raise £40,000, from the Uruguay Horse Trek and are asking participants to raise at least £3,450, with an additional registration fee of £395.

Every day in the UK, six young people are told they have cancer. This is a rising figure and there are already more young people than children with the disease. These young people often receive hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities catering for children or the elderly. Teenage Cancer Trust focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals designed to offer the very best chance of a positive outcome.

Nick Piggott, Events Manager at Teenage Cancer Trust says:

“Teenage Cancer Trust believes that teenagers should not have to stop being teenagers just because they have cancer. By organising fundraising treks like this one in Uruguay we can continue to develop specialist teenage cancer units within NHS hospitals. We currently only reach about half of all young people diagnosed with cancer.  Our goal is to ensure that every young person diagnosed with cancer in the UK has access to the specialist care we provide.”
