We have two fantastic competitions for you this month, including the chance to win two tickets to Your Horse Live as well as a competition on our all new kids page, kindly sponsored by Sugar Cubes Ponies.

Our career special continues this month with a case study on Essex based Entrepreneur Suzanne Brook.

Suzanne Brooke of HorseMinder has been building a solid client list since attending Business Link’s Start Your Own Business Boot Camp a year ago. Now ready to take her equine support firm to the next level, Suzanne has used Business Link’s Planning for Growth workshop and her Adviser to help her business over the next jump.

The Challenge

“I’ve been riding horses since I was five years old, and to say I am passionate about everything equine would be an understatement,” jokes Suzanne. “I have been able to combine my passion with my career, and to start my own business working with horses was always my ambition.”

Our big interview this month is with David Merret – a jack of all trades he has a fabulous career with horses so far, competing at Badminton and Burghley, even selecting an Olympic event team! Pick up the magazine to find out more…

Also, for four years David was on the senior Olympic selection committee, which meant he worked up to and including the 1996 Olympics at Atlanta, USA. The team we picked, which included Kristina Cook, Mary King and Charlotte Bathe, won the open European Championships the year before heading to Atlanta. “I missed the actual event but I did go to the olympics at Seoul in 1988 as an FEI volunteer. We were there for five weeks, stewarding on a rota system across all the disciplines – it was great fun and although we weren’t paid it didn’t cost us a thing.”

This month, we also visit Showstyle in Upminster, a family run business, which was started in 2008 by Linda Hill.

They are renowned for their distinctive designs, perfect to make any rider stand out in the show ring. Showstyle began from humble beginnings with Linda making bespoke show wear on a small sewing machine. She has always been a machinist, as well as owning horses and she decided to combine her interests and begin the business, which she originally ran from home.

Blaircourt’s Patrick Martin loks at ‘Managing a Strangles Outbreak in the Livery Yard Situation’ providing readers with lots of top tips and advice on how to look out for strangles and manage an outbreak;

A typical first case scenario will begin with a horse showing one of the following symptoms:

  • An abscess coming up around the face which may or may not rupture and discharge
  • Mucopurulent nasal discharge
  • Temperature, off colour
  • Cough

The first two clinical signs above would make one very suspicious of Strangles (although other more benign diseases can also cause any of the above symptoms).

The affected horse should immediately be isolated away from the general horse population, either in a separate stable with a separate entrance, or in a field in a far corner of the property. If possible, all horses that have been in-contact with the affected horse should be kept away from the rest of the horse population, but can be kept together if so wished. It is imperative that strict hygiene is initiated immediately to prevent potential spread of the bug.

We have managed to squeeze in MORE photos and show reports than EVER BEFORE! So take a look at the magazine and see if you can spot yourself or a friend!

Its not just the riders who enjoy reading Hooked on Horses!
