The German team – Janne Friederike Meyer, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Carsten-Otto Nagel and Marcus Ehning – took gold, with Nations Cup holders France second and Belgium third.
McPherson and Chamberlain Z were Britain’s discard score, with Smith (Talan) collecting eight faults, Brash (Intertoy Z) four and Whitaker (GIG Amai) going clear.
Smith will fly the British flag in the individual final, which gets under way tonight and concludes on Saturday night.
Whitaker just missed out on a place in the qualifying top 30, but the list does include one Irish rider in Billy Twomey, who will be aboard Tinka’s Serenade.
